My training spans two complementary areas of social service practice. The Social Service Worker diploma program focuses on direct client support, counselling skills, and case coordination. The Community Worker program expands this work into community development, facilitation, and program design. Together, these programs reflect a practice that supports individuals while also strengthening the communities around them.
The Social Service Worker diploma prepared me for frontline practice through a combination of counselling training, social justice education, and supervised field experience. Courses such as Interviewing and Counselling Skills, Anti-Oppressive Practice, Mental Health and Well-Being, and Case Management built practical tools for supporting individuals navigating complex life circumstances. Field placements with the John Howard Society and the Self Help Resource Centre allowed this learning to be applied in real community settings. These experiences shaped a grounded, client-centered approach to supporting people with dignity and practical support. They also built a strong foundation for facilitation, assessment, and direct client work in community settings.
The Community Worker program expands my practice from individual support to community-based programming and facilitation. Courses such as Community Development, Group Facilitation, Social Policy and Social Justice, and Program Planning focus on building responsive programs and strengthening community networks. A year-long field placement with Fred Victor Employment and Training Services has provided hands-on experience supporting employment programming and workshop facilitation. Together, this training strengthens my ability to design practical initiatives that support both individuals and communities. The experience connected classroom theory directly to real community practice through facilitation, program planning, and client engagement.
Field placements provided the opportunity to apply classroom learning within active community agencies while working directly with clients and programs in frontline environments. The evaluations below include supervisor assessments from placements at the Self Help Resource Centre and Fred Victor Employment & Training Services.
